"I am a fly fisher. I have also suffered from breast cancer. It is my pleasure and priviledge to introduce you to Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland. This initiative is the first of its kind to combine therapy and support for breast cancer patients with the gentle art of fly fishing. Casting for Recovery has been up and running in North America for several years no with an incredible success rate, and we are well on the way to replicating their success with our programmer of retreats across the UK and Ireland. It is our aim to benefit and inspire many thousands of brave women and to help them enjoy the best of stunning landscapes and waters over the coming years. We also hope that they fall under the spell of fly fishing in the process - I certainly did.!
Casting for Recovery (CfR) uses a unique formula of fly fishing and counselling to promote mental and physical healing within a rural setting for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer. CfR is very simple: ladies apply to attend a retreat (with medical clearance) and if they are sucessful, they are then taken away on a 2 ½ day experience that, past participants have already told us, are amongst the best they have ever had.
The dynamics of fly fishing provide a healing connection to the natural world, relieving everyday stress and promoting a sense of calm. Fly fishing techniques provide gentle exercise for joint and soft tissue mobility. Ladies are also taught the fundamentals of fly casting, entomology, knot-tying and equipment basics - but most importantly, they spend time on the water practicing catch-and-release fishing. Trained facilitators staff each retreat including a psychotherapist, a health care professional (e.g. a nurse, physiotherapist) and three/four qualified fly fishing instructors.
