Hello and welcome to February’s Newsletter. Our Meeting took place on World Cancer Day (4th February).
Service News:
Peterborough City Hospital have, over the last 12 months, enhanced their services by:
- Launching the Lung Cancer Screening Programme for earlier detection and treatment of
lung cancers. Letters are being sent out inviting people to participate in the screening programme. - Providing a single Point of Access for patients to ensure equity of care.
- Ensuring patients are seen by the right team in the right place.
- Improving their data quality and reduce the risk of patient records being missed.
Breast Care Nurses / Breast Care Unit:
We welcomed Michaela and Liz (Breast Care Nurses) to our meeting. They updated us on staffing at the Unit, imaging results and their length of time for receipt. On the topic of ultrasounds, the nurses explained you can be called back after an ultrasound. The purpose of an ultrasound is to investigate specific symptoms like pain or palpable lumps, or to further examine areas of concern found on a mammogram or MRI. The nurses said if anyone is worried about possible recurrence of cancer they must have a clinical examination. They can also request a CT scan.

Group Chat:
The topic of post-breast cancer medication was discussed. One member referred to the side effects of Anastrozole. She said she is experiencing a lot of bone pain. Another member said they were experiencing very bad night sweats. They are taking Ribociclib. This is a targeted therapy.
A member said she wears a medical alert bracelet. This informs first responders of critical health conditions, allergies or medications if the wearer is unconscious or not able to communicate. This would be particularly useful where for example you don’t want blood taken from the affected arm if the lymph nodes have been removed. The website is: TheIDbandco.com They cost £4.95.
Joan, from Stamford, announced a new cancer group: Prostate Cancer Group. Meetings will be held at the Stamford Rugby Club on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6.30pm.
Other News:
Proposed Wellbeing Day for Members: We are looking into having a Wellbeing Day for members. The idea is to have a mix of pampering, informative talks, food and refreshments. This will be raised at our next meeting to get some feedback from members to see if they would be interested in attending and the format/content of the day.
