Breast Care Nurses:
Unexpectedly the breast care nurses attended our meeting which was a welcome bonus to our meeting! We were told there will now be extra support for patients going through breast screening. They explained that understandably anxiety is very high for those who have been called back after a mammogram. There will now be a Support Screening Clinic twice a week to offer support and guidance prior to the patient getting their test results. All members will have experienced the stress of waiting for results and the temptation of scouring the internet for information which is probably the worst thing to do. The introduction of this new clinic will be a crucial and valuable addition to the services offered by the Breast Unit and will go a long way to support those during the hiatus between the test and the results.
Mammograms:
It was clarified that breast screening for women aged 50-70 is by appointment only. Invitations are sent automatically to women up until their 71st birthday. Women aged 71 years or over can contact their breast screening unit to make an appointment every 3 years. Women with breast symptoms should contact their GP and not wait for their routine appointment.
The nurses confirmed they will be attending our June meeting. If anyone does have any questions for the nurses, please email/message me beforehand so I can pass these on to the nurses before the meeting.
Cancer Patient Partnership Group (CPPG):
Joan from the Stamford Cancer Support Group told the Group she has joined this Group as the representative for Stamford. The Group is made up of team of patients, carers and hospital staff who aim to improve cancer services by sharing patients’ views, identify things that are working well and areas that could be improved on. The Group aims to improve services for those affected by cancer, help bring about change in partnership with the Health Services and contribute to develop future services. Their meetings take place at the Wellbeing Centre at the hospital every two months. Next Meeting:
1st May 2025 – Jean Ralph from Eloise Lingerie at the Holiday Inn Thorpewood 7.00pm to 9.00pm. Jean will be bringing a range of items from Eloise’s catalogue, bras, swimwear and prosthetic breast forms. Jean is lovely, this is her second visit to the Group, her first prompting a visit by Members to their shop in Milton Keynes.
